You’ve set your New Year's resolutions and goals for 2023. You’re off to a solid start even.
The sad news is that it can be difficult to maintain forward momentum over time.
In fact, data shows that only
9-12%
of people successfully stick to their New Year’s Resolutions.
Why is it so hard to stick to it?
And how can you beat the odds?
Strategy 1: Set specific, measurable and achievable goals
How will you know when you have achieved a successful outcome if you don’t have a specific date and measurement for it?
The answer: you won’t.
When we set resolutions and goals, the more specific we are, the better off we are.
We must know what it will look like. Feel like. Sound like…when we arrive at our end goal.
For example, if you want to meditate more….. How many minutes a day? How many days a week?
What will this do for you?
How will you hold yourself accountable?
When you travel will you stick with it?
Here are some examples of solid resolutions and goals:
Set specific goals with numbers and dates. Once you’ve set them, site with them. Reflect on what it will feel like once you’ve achieved them.
Do they excite you? If not, revisit and reset some new goals.
We want goals and resolutions that motivate and drive us.
The first astronaut didn’t make it to the moon with a goal alone.
No…they set out specific plans.
They tested. They failed.
They got back up….dusted themselves off…and tried again.
For each of your goals and resolutions, put together an actionable plan.
A plan that will get you there.
Most of us never achieve our goals simply because they are too big. We haven’t reverse engineered what it will take to make them real.
Rewind backwards from success and map out the step by step action plan you need to make success inevitable.
And if you need help with this, consider working with a coach or mentor.
But don’t forget, your biggest heroes didn’t get to where they are today without a step by step plan.
Print out your plan. Share it with your family, friends and mentor.
Share it publicly and openly.
Research shows that sharing your goals with people you care about increases your chances at success by at least
33%.
Why?
When we share with those who care about us, they ask us how it’s going.
We feel more like we need to show up. We are more willing to continue taking bold action because we don’t want to fail.
Accountability works.
Commit to your plan. Share it.
Ask for accountability. Have weekly and monthly check-ins.
If you commit to growing 1% every day, you will grow 365% this year alone!
That’s incredible!
Commit. Take action. Make your dreams come true.
Much of growth and goal setting is about the journey.
We won’t always hit every single goal out of the park.
But we grow new skills and confidence as we get closer to them.
We slowly mold ourselves into the leader we want to be as we take bigger, bolder action.
The journey is where we build character. It’s where we discover the stuff we are made of.
It’s also where we learn to reframe looking at failure as feedback. Failure isn’t failure if you learn from it.
You can choose to suffer. Or you can choose to learn from your setbacks.
And in every hero’s journey, there are moments where we get to stop and celebrate from the mountain tops.
But there are also small wins along the way. Perhaps getting out of bed on a tough day is a small win.
Or calling someone to help you with a goal is a small win.
Every win is worth celebrating. Share it with loved ones.
Create a vision board and add all your wins to it as post-its over the year.
This way on a rough day, you can look back at all your progress.
Celebrate your progress. Perfection doesn’t exist. But you can grow bit by bit every single day.
Take action that matches the size of your resolutions and goals.
