How to Set Goals That You Can Actually Achieve

Break Large Goals Down Into Smaller Ones


This is one of the most effective tools that many people don't learn until they begin lifestyle coaching. For example, if you want to learn a new language or master public speaking, it's important to have smaller, clearly defined goals stretched out over time. Rather than saying you want to learn French by the end of the year, make the goal smaller, such as a decision to study French for 30 minutes every day.



Set a Deadline


Without a deadline, it's difficult to follow through on your goals and see them through to completion. Phrasing a goal in a different way will make it more likely that you achieve it. One example is expanding your exercise routine. Rather than saying that you'll start going to three workout classes per week, state the goal in a step-up fashion. This week I'll go to one class, two the next week, and so on. This way, your goal of regularly attending three classes per week by the end of the month is much more achievable.



Don't Hesitate to Re-examine Your Expectations


Once you've reached your current goals, you'll want to reexamine where you are. Were the goals too easy or is it time to increase them? Or maybe the opposite is true. After diligent efforts towards meeting them, they still seem out of reach. Honestly assessing where you are each month can help you alter your goals so that they make sense. There's no sense in continuing to beat yourself up over a goal that just isn't going to happen. Reassess and alter current goals so that they're in alignment with your personal expectations and abilities.
